The origins of the Metropolitan School for Performing Arts of Buenos Aires lies in a small course in vocational theatre for the youth, implemented at the Instituto Labardén in the early 1960s. In 1965 it was transformed into a full fledged theatre school, at request of the educational community.
EMAD has kept developing continuously since then and eventually became an independent institution. Since 1974 it has been the center for modern theatrical education of Buenos Aires.
